HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting
Course Overview
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants and children in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.
It applies to workers within education and care settings who are required to respond to first aid emergencies, including asthma and anaphylactic incidents. This includes early childhood educators and those working with school-aged children in outside school hours care and vacation programs.
This unit may contribute toward approved first aid, asthma, and anaphylaxis training under the Education and Care Services National Law and the Education and Care Services National Regulations (2011).
Note: Specific licensing and refresher training requirements should be obtained from the relevant state or territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authorities.

- Asthma management and emergency response
- CPR techniques for adults, children, and infants
- Compliance with first aid regulations under the Education and Care Services National Law and Regulations (2011)
- Incident reporting procedures in a childcare setting
- Understanding child physiology
- How to assess and respond to emergency situations in childcare
- DRSABCD Action Plan
- Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- First aid procedures for bleeding, burns, and fractures
- Managing chronic conditions such as epilepsy in a childcare environment
- Handling medical emergencies such as snake and spider bites, poisons, and choking
- Infection control procedures
- Managing exposure to extreme temperatures
- Administering first aid for eye injuries and soft tissue damage
- Assessing and moving sick or injured individuals
- Understanding the legal responsibilities of a first aider
- Basic anatomy
- Managing shock in emergency situations
Course Delivery
- Delivery Mode: Face-to-face training at one of our locations
- All practical assessments are completed with your trainer in real time in a safe and realistic environment.
- Pre-course Requirement: Mandatory eLearning to be completed prior to attending.
- Duration: 6 hours of face-to-face training and assessment.
